Come celebrate International Women's Day 2018

An International Women’s Day celebration, including a free lunch, is being hosted by Alternatives for Women on Thursday, March 8 from 12 noon to 2pm at the Picton Town Hall.

“We’re really excited to provide an opportunity to brainstorm ideas with everyone in the community using this year’s International Women’s Day theme of Press for Progress,” said Christine Renaud, of Alternatives for Women.

As well, Alternatives for Women Executive Director, Rahno Boutilier, will announce the plans for the agency's move to a new and larger location.

With the World Economic Forum's 2017 Global Gender Gap Report findings revealing that gender parity may be over 200 years away, there has never been a more important time to stay motivated. More promising is the fact that global activism for women's equality is being fuelled by movements like #MeToo, #TimesUp and others, so there is a strong global momentum working for change.

“But we feel that it is important to start making change right here, right now, in our own communities,” says Renaud. “And that’s going to mean our getting together to discuss ideas, build alliances and relationships, and start making plans for action.”

There will be childcare available at this event, and everyone is invited to participate.

“All ideas generated will be collected and made into a zine,” says Renaud, “which is like a small magazine, and we will distribute copies in the community.”

International Women's Day is not country, group, or organisation specific but a day to both celebrate women’s achievements while recognizing the struggles that still lay ahead as we strive for equality for women in all spheres of life.
